Sports photographer Adam Pretty

Who he is:
Sports photographer for Getty Images; also a commercial photographer

What's to love about him:
He has shown a mastery of the camera's technicality [a very important thing for sports photographers, or photojournalists in general] so much so that he has been creating one of the most artful works of photojournalism known today.

Why create? They say you cannot create a photograph; you simply take it. Advocates would especially point to photojournalism, where a Take Two is never an option; and specifically to sports photography, where a photographer can never anticipate a winning shot (both on the end of the player and his own) when it does happen.

But Adam Pretty's photos are another matter altogether. They are not mere photographs taken at the spur of the moment; they are a seamless product of photography's creative and technical aspects, something that only *great* photographers can do simultaneously. Pretty's photojournalism is comparable to the storytelling that White House Photographer Pete Souza is capable of, although of course these two men are great in their own unique ways.

I first saw Adam Pretty's works from the digital edition of the Digital Camera World Magazine's free September 2011 issue, filed under the section Digital Interview. And here are excerpts from the article:

Digital Camera World says of the above photo, taken during the 2000 Olympic Games: "Ronny Weller of Germany celebrates winning silver in the men's 105kg weightlifting final at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games"

And these, folks, are what all the fuss really is about.
